I was very honoured to be asked to speak at Queensland Prisoner’s Legal Service’s very successful CPD fundraiser event ‘Human Rights and the Criminal Justice System’ last Friday.

My session was on Visa Cancellations and Sentencing, and the potentially catastrophic impact of criminal matters on visa holders, especially highly vulnerable people (including people with severe mental health issues, disabilities and children).

This is a topic I am incredibly passionate about: the disproportionate impact of the current legislative and policy framework around visa cancellations on persons who are already significantly disadvantaged within the legal system is absolutely shocking.

It was an incredibly interesting and inspiring day – I left feeling very motivated.
