Career Milestones and Special Clients

Portrait photo of Deepika beside a green lead plant

I officially became admitted as a solicitor in July 2017, so I am now at the 5 year milestone as a lawyer. I am so happy and grateful to have been able to make this career change: being a lawyer doesn’t feel like it’s my job; it feels like it is my purpose, and my vocation.

This brings me to the beautiful person in this photo, Deepika. She was my very first immigration law client. I helped her with her merits review application at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (working with the incredible Charlotte Yellowlees then at Salvos Legal Humanitarian).

Deepika was granted her permanent residency visa on 9 August 2017 and became an Australian citizen a few years later.

I got to catch up with Deepika again this morning after 5 years. Despite all the hardships and suffering she has gone through, Deepika has achieved so much: she is now in her third year of her social work degree and is doing her placement in aged care. She wants to dedicate her life to help people, and she is a kind and beautiful soul, inside and out. Five years after she got her visa she bought me this beautiful plant (currently in a place of honour in my kitchen!)

Getting to play a small part in helping people like Deepika has really been my life’s privilege, and I will never take that for granted. This has been a really good day. ☺️
